Fats - Good Food for Under Fives

Welcome Back to Session 3 - Healthy eating for the under 5s

Key things to remember about this group

  • Small stomach relative to energy needs
  • Need energy but also need other nutrients
  • Learning about food but may be reluctant to try new things
  • Good eating habits in the early years will have benefits throughout their lifetime

Types of fats

  • Saturated
  • Polyunsaturated
  • Monounsaturated
  • Trans fats

What do we get from fat?

  • Energy
  • Fat soluble vitamins
  • Essential fatty acids

Why is fat important for the under fives?

Need to provide high energy in small volume, high fat foods can also be nutritious eg

  • Full fat milk
  • Cheese
  • Yoghurt
  • Nuts

What about oily fish?

  • Omega 3 oils not cod liver oil
  • Links with CHD
  • Concentration and behaviour - lack of conclusive evidence
  • Which is better, food or supplements
  • Limits on consumption due to PCBs

Can children have too much fat?
