Sugar and Salt - how much is too much?

Welcome Back to Session 2 - Healthy eating for the under 5s
Key things to remember about this group
- Small stomach relative to energy needs
- Need energy but also need other nutrients
- Learning about food but may be reluctant to try new things
- Good eating habits in the early years will have benefits throughout
their lifetime
This session will help you to...
- Understand the concept of nutrient dense foods
- Learn the types of foods which would be suitable choices as snacks and
drinks for under fives
- Be able to understand from the labels of foods how much salt and or
sugar they contain
How much salt and sugar can the 0-5s have?
Recommended maximum intakes of salt per day:
Recommended proportion of energy from sugar:
Where do we find sugar and salt?
What are the most salty foods?
- Preserved foods eg Salt fish, bacon
- Pre-prepared foods eg ready meals, bread, cereals
- Seasonings eg stock cubes, salt added
What are the most sugary foods?
- Snacks eg biscuits, cakes, sweets
- Condiments eg ketchup, jam
- Drinks eg fizzy drinks, squash
How do you know how much salt or sugar is in a food?
Food labels - look for....
- Carbohydrates.....of which sugar
- Salt
- Sodium - x 2.5
Remember, 1 teaspoon = 5g
