Cooking
up a Treat in Croydon Nurseries
Inspired by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver's TV mission to bring healthy foods
into schools Croydon Council is about to launch a pioneering project to improve
nutrition among young children and babies.
Croydon's environmental health food safety team is to run free workshops and
training on healthy cooking and nutrition awareness in fifteen of the borough's
nurseries after scooping a £10,000 grant from the Food Standards Agency.
Joining forces with community dieticians at Croydon PCT, they have drawn up
an exciting new training package to help participating nurseries provide
nutritious healthier meals using inexpensive ingredients that are easy to
prepare.
During four sessions, that start in September, meal providers will pick up
new skills to develop menus low in saturated fats, sugar, salt and high in fruit
and vegetables. The sessions include developing ideas on healthy recipes; how to
shop nutritiously; how to read food labels; how to identify good and bad fats,
healthy carbohydrates and fruits and vegetables; and weaning.
There will also be practical cooking and tasting sessions run by an expert
dietician and professional chef to enable the cooks to put the information they
have learnt into practice.
This website will
feature the participating nurseries as promoting high nutritional standards and
healthy eating. Details of recipes and their preparation, advice on fats,
sugars, salt and weaning will also be provided.
