Croydon Schools' Sports Council Presentation Evening 2005

Pictured above are the Award Winners at Croydon Schools' Sport Council's "Excellence in Sports" Awards Evening on Tuesday 15th March 2005 at Croydon Town Hall.

Outstanding young sportsmen and sportswomen in Croydon schools, received awards to recognise their having represented Surrey teams, at Croydon Schools' Sports Council's annual Excellence in Sports Awards Evening.

Croydon Council's Cabinet Member for Culture & Sport, Stuart Collins, presented the awards, in the council chamber at Croydon's town hall, and congratulated the 38 recipients - from 13 schools in the borough on their achievements in being selected for county teams at Under 16 level and above in seven sports ranging from athletics to rugby league.

Rose Anne Ellis - Croydon Education Department's Group director - Quality Development, drew the attention of students and parents to the positive aspects of taking part in sport.

Football was the sport best represented, with no fewer than eleven pupils having represented Surrey Schools' Football Association Under 16s county team - including six students from Edenham High School, Shirley.

The newest member of the Croydon Schools' Sports Council - rugby league - were represented by John Dooley (Whitgift), Matt Watson (Woodcote) and Lee McCarthy (Edenham), all of whom have played for the South of England representative team.

Danny Doyley (Thomas More School) who won a gold medal in the English Schools' Athletic Association's Track & Field championships 4 x 100 metres relay, was one of eight athletes receiving awards.

Four students from The Archbishop Lanfranc School were amongst the six Basketball award winners, whilst brother and sister, Richard and Vicky Golbourn (Edenham High School) were present to receive their hockey awards.

Netball's sole recipient was Philippa Coates of Croydon High School.

Croydon Schools' Cricket Association's Under 15 captain, Tom Livesey (Trinity School) also received an award, to mark Croydon Schools' winning of the prestigious Hobbs Trophy, against South London Schools at The Oval, in June, 2004, Croydon's record-breaking seventh successive victory.

The function was organised by Peter Westlake MBE, Chair of the Croydon Schools' Sports Council.
