2007/2008 Season - Under 14'sCroydon Schools' U14s 0 Aldershot & Farnborough Schools' U14s 3 (May)The 3-0 score line did not reflect the story behind visitors, Aldershot & Farnborough Schools' Under 14s win in the Surrey Schools' Football Association's Laurance Edwards Memorial Shield Final at Shelton Sports & Leisure, Warlingham, last week. In an entertaining final, both teams created chances. The visitors were better at converting their opportunities, whilst Croydon's good approach play did not result in goals. County players, Alex Wynter (Ashburton) shone in midfield, whilst up front Kyle De Silva caused Aldershot plenty of problems. Five Croydon players made their debuts, with striker Daniel Hughes (Harris Academy) catching the eye. Croydon trailed 1-0 at half-time, and the introduction of Kyle Rowe (Harris at South Norwood) brought an injection of speed and strength in the Croydon attack, but two defence-splitting moves brought two more goals within ten minutes from the re-start. Croydon coach, Peter Yates, said "It's been a difficult season, with several setbacks, but we're moving in the right direction and hope to do better next season, especially in the national English Schools' FA's inter-Association trophy competition." Croydon squad: Salsano, Hughes, Crawford, De Silva, Grant (all Harris Academy), John, Wynter (both Ashburton), Wilkinson (Riddlesdown), Almandras, Hackshall (both Edenham), Don (The Archbishop Lanfranc), Kennedy (Woodcote), Honey (Archbishop Tenison's), Rowe (Harris at South Norwood), Bregger (Thomas More) Croydon Schools' Under 14s 0 Hackney & Tower Hamlets' Under 14s 5 (1st March)Croydon Schools' Under 14s struggled to control a useful Hackney side in the much-postponed London Schools' Football Association's Sun Shield first round tie at Shelton Sports Club, Warlingham on Saturday morning, going down 5-0 to a margin which flattered the visitors. Hackney went ahead after two minutes and added further goals to make it 3-0 in their favour at half-time. Croydon had created chances but failed to convert them into goals. Croydon – weakened by injuries and late cry-offs suffered another blow when skipper Brady Almandras (Edenham) had to leave the field with a knee strain early into the second half. With no substitutes available Croydon had to contest the encounter with only ten players. Ricky Borrett (Selsdon High) had an outstanding match in goal for Croydon and could not be blamed for any of the goals. Croydon were stretched at the back and conceded two more goals to make the final score 5-0. Croydon squad: Ricky Borrett (Selsdon), Louis John, Harry Osborne, Alex Wynter (all Ashburton), Matt Wilkinson (Riddlesdown) Brady Almandras (Edenham), Matt Sunday (Archbishop Tenison's), Aidan Kennedy (Woodcote), Nathan Hardy (Riddlesdown), Nathan Antwi (Harris Academy at Crystal Palace), Kyle Rowe (Harris Academy at South Norwood) Croydon Schools' U14s 1 Aldershot & Farnborough Schools 4 (6th February)Missed chances and defensive lapses cost Croydon Schools' U14s dearly when they went down 4-1 to visitors Aldershot & Farnborough at Croydon Arena last week, in a Surrey Schools' Laurence Edwards Memorial Shield league encounter. The visitors' goalkeeper had a fine match, snuffing out what Croydon chances came his way whilst at the other end his colleagues went ahead after eleven minutes, from a free-kick. Croydon trailed 1-0 at half-time. The second half began with action at both ends. Croydon missed two good chances from short range, whilst the visitors netted twice in three minutes. Aldershot increased their lead to 4-0 from a breakaway but Croydon gained a consolation goal ten minutes from time, when Kyle Rowe (Harris Academy) fired home from close range. Croydon squad: Kosky (Whitgift), John (Ashburton), Wilkinson (Riddlesdown), Vose (CAFCO), Osborne (Ashburton), Fairman, Hackshall (both Edenham), Wynter (Ashburton), Rowe (Harris Academy), Almandras (Edenham), De Silva (Harris CTC), Kennedy (Woodcote), Marshall (Riddlesdown), Holder-Young (Ashburton) Bromley Schools' Under 14s 6 Croydon Schools' Under 14s 3 (26th November)Defensive weaknesses left Croydon a mountain to climb in this first round English Schools' Area Eagles Trophy at Kent County Cricket Club on Monday. Although Croydon put a brave face on things, Bromley bossed the first half, scoring three times in the last ten minutes of the first half. Bromley gained a penalty straight after half-time to go 4-0 up but Kyle Rowe (Stanley Technical) pulled a goal back ten minutes later. Another defence-splitting move put Bromley 5-1 up. Aidan Kennedy (Woodcote) marked his debut , coming on as substitute two minutes from time, and scoring with a clever lob, Alex Wynter (Ashburton) further reduced the deficit in stoppage time but Bromley had the last word, making the final verdict 6-3. Croydon squad: Ben Koskey (Whitgift), Louis John (Ashburton), James Lowey, Ross Marshall, Matthew Wilkinson (all Riddlesdown), Dominic Vose (CAFCO), Brady Almandras (Denham), Charlie Hackshall (Edenham) Kyle De Silva (Harris CTC), Kyle Rowe (Stanley Technical), Rhys Holder-Young (Ashburton), George Gomez (Whitgift), Aidan Kennedy (Woodcote), Lakaei Dixon (Archbishop Tenison's) ![]()
