2006/2007 Season - Under 16's
Croydon Schools' Under 16s 2 Woking Schools' Under 16s 2 (Croydon win
5-3 on aggregate)
Croydon Schools' Football Association's Under 16 borough side finished their
careers with the CSFA in triumphant mode after an exciting Surrey Schools' FA
Cyril Black Trophy second leg 2-2 verdict against Woking Schools at Croydon
Sports Arena last week, which meant an overall 5-3 margin, and the winning of
the trophy for Croydon.
Croydon fielded a full strength squad, boosted by the unexpected inclusion of
Republic of Ireland U17 player, Sean Scannell of Ashburton Community School, a
promising scholarship member at Crystal Palace Football Club.
Sean, who has missed only a handful of CSFA borough matches since being a
member of the Under 12 squad, arrived fresh from Ireland's participation in the
European Championships in Germany, where Ireland finished runners-up to Germany,
after a 1-0 win over Greece and a 2-1 win over Scotland.
Croydon had the advantage of a 3-1 first leg lead but found visitors Woking
in defiant mood.
The visitors included several Surrey county players, including regular county
centre-back, Graham Edwards, and goalkeeper, Liam Poupart.
The warning signs were soon out for Croydon as shots from Woking twice
rebounded from the crossbar.
Croydon trailed 2-0 but with the outcome in the melting pot a spectacular 30
yard pile driver effort from Nathaniel Pinney (Selsdon) which hit the back of
the net before Poupart moved put Croydon one goal to the good, ten minutes after
the break.
Scannell was in the thick of things, either orchestrating the play in
midfield or posing a threat as striker. Ten minutes before the end, a pulsating
match was decisively settled as the ubiquitous Scannell, picked up ball on
halfway line, "nutmegged" a Woking player, outpaced two defenders and slotted
the ball home, just inside the left upright with deadly accuracy from 20 yards.
For once, the Croydon players were excused their histrionics as they
celebrated their goal celebrations, which gave much satisfaction to team
manager, Andrew Cook (Archbishop Tenison's).
"This was a fine team performance and a memorable way for the boys to end
their involvement with borough schools teams. They have remained loyal and
have experienced highs and lows with commendable discipline."
"The squad especially appreciated the late availability of Sean whose
exceptional skills had a great bearing on the outcome."
CSFA Hon Secretary, David Lomas, introducing CSFA Chairman, Peter Westlake
prior to the presentation of the Trophy and awards, congratulated both teams on
their careers as borough players and remarked upon the fine sporting spirit
shown by both teams in each leg.
"With so much media publicity about the indiscipline of hyped-up
superstars and overpaid players it is tempting for young players to imitate
the antics of so-called professional players."
"Our disciplinary record this season for all our six borough teams is
outstanding, with not a single yellow card having been reported."
Croydon squad: Vikrant Shah, James Oliver-Pearce (both Thomas
More), Tyrone Wedderburn (The Archbishop Lanfranc), Aaron Thompson (Selsdon
high0, Louis Headley (Ashburton), Danny Aldous (Edenham) (captain), Jenson Grant

Douglin, (Ashburton), Charlie Ottaway (St Joseph's), Hakeem Adelukan (Archbishop

Croydon Schools' Under 16s 1 Islington & Camden Schools' Under 16s 2
(4th November)
Croydon's Under 16s pushed visitors, Islington & Camden, all the way in the
first round of the London Schools' Hawke Trophy but failed to take the tie into
extra-time, with the visitors shading the tie, 2-1.
Croydon went behind to a tenth minute penalty which the Croydon management of
Andrew Cook (Archbishop Tenison's) and Niall Attenborough (Shirley) described as
"dubious".
Croydon goalkeeper, Danny Baldwinson got both hands to the spot-kick but
couldn't prevent the visitors going ahead.
The visitors secured a second penalty but this time Baldwinson made a good
save to keep Croydon in the match.
Islington went 2-0 up before half-time. A change in tactics by Croydon
- playing three at the Back - saw an increase in chances for Croydon but
it wasn't until seven minutes from time that Sunni James (Riddlesdown) reduced
the arrears with a clinical finish to round off a great solo run.
