2005/2006 Season - Under 13's

Croydon Schools' U13s  4  Woking Schools' U13s  3 after extra time (24th April)

Inspired substitutions by stand in Manager, Peter Yates (Ashburton) saw Croydon Schools' U13s twice come from behind to win 4-3 with a goal from Peter Sherlock (Riddlesdown) in the last minute of extra time to rescue Croydon's flagging foray and lift the Surrey Schools' Wood Trophy in an exciting match of fluctuating fortunes at Croydon Arena on Monday night.

Crystal Palace Football Manager, Iain Dowie, who coined the phrase "bouncebackability" would surely have used that label to apply to Croydon's performance, especially after their heaviest defeat for two seasons when they were crushed 4-0 by Mid Sussex last week.

Croydon got off to their usual slow start against a determined and talented Woking team, and soon found themselves 2-0 down.  But Croydon, urged on by a partisan sizeable crowd showed their fighting spirit, lead by skipper Sam Driver, hit back through Ibra Sekajja (Ashburton) who reduced the arrears with an easy chance, following a chance from ten yards out, set up by Driver.

When Sekajja was pushed in the back on the stroke of half time, referee Colin Howes (Warlingham) awarded a penalty for Croydon, after consulting his assistant who had spotted the offence and raised his flag.  Driver made no mistake from the spot kick and Croydon were back on level terms at the interval.

Croydon goal keeper, Lewis Higgins (Edenham), was in fine form as both sides pressed for a decisive goal in the second half.  The writing looked to be on the wall when Woking nosed ahead to make it 3-2 after the first period of extra time.  Yates brought on Juevan Spencer (Selsdon) for Johnny Pitt (Woodcote), who shot Croydon level at 3-3 with his first touch of the ball, rolling his shot into the bottom corner of the net from 20 yards out.

The match looked to be heading for a draw but in a dramatic finish, substitute Peter Sherlock (Riddlesdown) who came on for Driver, netted the vital decider in the last minute.

Croydon Schools' U13s  0  Mid Sussex Schools' U13s  4  (19th April)

Croydon ended up well beaten in this English Schools' South East Area Wimbledon Challenge Cup Semi Final at Croydon Arena last Wednesday evening.

A physical Mid Sussex side came with an obvious game plan to pack the midfield and stifle Croydon's normal fluent passing game.

Having not played since February Croydon began sluggishly, and found themselves behind after 11 minutes when Croydon keeper Sujit Dadar (Ridddlesdown) missed an attempted punch clear allowing a simple tap in. Croydon responded and might have been well ahead by half time. Peter Sherlock (Riddlesdown) found himself in space at the edge of the box but shot wide, then a fine passing move resulted in Ibrah Sekajah (Ashburton) heading only just over; and then a Sekajah 1-2 with Sam Driver (Whitgift) put Sekajah in on goal only for the keeper to save well.

Croydon continued to have the better of possession in the second period but fell further behind after 10 minutes when following a long throw in to the box a Mid Sussex forward was allowed time to turn and score; and Croydon's hopes of a second successive Final appearance in the English Schools Trophy disappeared 8 minutes later when a harmless looking long range effort squirmed in to make it 3-0. The score line took on a wholly flattering appearance when, with Croydon pressing forward, Mid Sussex broke away to make it 4-0 with the last kick.

Croydon squad:  Dadar (Riddlesdown) Turner (Harris CTC), Graham-Turner (Ashburton),McQueen (Coulsdon), Chin, Lugard, Watt (all Woodcote), Robe, Driver, Ankrah (all Whitgift), Andrew (The Archbishop Lanfranc), Brown (Thomas More), Sekajja (Ashburton), Sherlock, Toovey (both Riddlesdown), Spencer (Selsdon)

Croydon Schools' U13s  4  Sutton Schools' U13s  0  (8th February)

Croydon Schools Under 13's continued their fine run of form with a sparkling 4-0 win over local rivals Sutton Schools in the semi final of the Surrey Schools' Football Association's Wood Cup, at Croydon Arena last Wednesday.

With illness decimating the regular squad, newcomers Dean McQueen (Coulsdon) and Louis Chin (Woodcote) ably deputised, alongside regulars George Robe (Whitgift) and Dominic Lugard (Woodcote) in defence, and the new unit restricted Sutton to a single long range shot on goal throughout, which was comfortably dealt with by keeper, Lewis Higgins (Edenham).

Croydon's powerful midfield of Gary Andrew (The Archbishop Lanfranc), Ibra Sekajja (Ashburton), Cameron Watt (Woodcote) and Arron Toovey (Riddlesdown), also dominated, providing good service to front two Sam Driver (Whitgift) and Peter Sherlock (Riddlesdown).

Croydon were well in command throughout the first half and only desperate defending and goal line clearances kept honours even at the interval. However Croydon deservedly went ahead five minutes into the second half when elusive skipper Driver broke into the box and was upended. Driver coolly took the spot kick himself, driving low into the corner.  This signalled the end of Sutton's brave resistance with Croydon then adding three more goals.

Within eleven minutes Croydon doubled their lead when Sekajja tricked his way through several tackles to slot home.

Watt rounded off a man-of-the-match performance with a crisp volley, hooking in when Sutton failed to clear a Croydon corner.

Croydon's third goal was a fine team effort as Watt, Driver and Sekajja exchanged first-time passes to send in substitute Shaun Brown (Thomas More) to shoot powerfully into the roof of the net.

The win sends this Croydon squad into their third successive Surrey Cup Final, having won the trophy as under 11's and under 12's. They will play either Kingston or Woking in the Final.

Croydon squad:  Lewis Higgins (Edenham), Dean McQueen (Coulsdon), Louis Chin, Dominic Lugard (both Woodcote), George Robe (Whitgift), Gary Andrew (The Archbishop Lanfranc), Shaun Brown (Thomas More), Ibra Sekajja (Ashburton), Sam Driver (Whitgift), Cameron Watt (Woodcote), Peter Sherlock (Riddlesdown), Jeuvan Spencer (Selsdon), Sujit Dadar (Riddlesdown)

Sutton squad:  Iles, Drewitt, Mason, Brackstone,Vickery, Breedon, Naraine, Skeets, Cunningham (all Carshalton Boys Sports College), Falsham, De Cruz, Beaver (all Glenthorne)

Brighton Schools U13s  0   Croydon Schools U13s  3 (26th January)

Croydon Schools' Football Association's Under 13 Borough side were in convincing form, producing their best result this season, when they travelled to Whitehawk Football Club, last Thursday and won 3-0 against Brighton Schools to clinch a place in the semi-final of the South East Area Wimbledon Challenge Cup competition.

On a bitterly cold evening Croydon were soon ahead when Cameron Watt (Woodcote) cashed in on a defence-splitting pass from skipper Sam Driver (Whitgift) after only seven minutes.

Brighton rarely threatened and when they did Croydon's defenders snuffed out their efforts.

Striker, Ibra Sekajja (Ashburton) saw his overhead kick strike an upright and rebound to the Brighton goalkeeper after twenty minutes but he was on target only a minute later, latching on to a pass from Driver.  Croydon had a let-off in the 25th minute when, following a breakaway move, a shot rebounded off the crossbar.

Midfield player, Arron Toovey (Riddlesdown) embarked on a fine solo run, two minutes into the second half, waltzing past several defenders before putting Croydon 3-0 up and well in command.

Croydon continued to impress with numerous attacking moves, whilst keeper, Sujit Dadar (Riddlesdown) dealt confidently with the few shots that came his way.

Team managers David Lomas and Mike Wadsley brought on substitutes, Peter Sherlock (Riddlesdown) and Jeuvan Spencer (Selsdon) for Sekajja and Dominic Lugard (Woodcote) fifteen minutes before the final whistle.

Substitute goalkeeper, Lewis Higgins (Edenham), played a cameo role in the last five minutes, pulling off two good saves.

Watt saw his shot hit the post two minutes from time.  Josh Turner (Ashburton) and Gary Andrew (The Archbishop Lanfranc) were outstanding in Croydon's defence, Watt and Johnny Pitt (Woodcote) shone in midfield whilst Sekajja and Driver combined well upfront, causing problems for an overworked Brighton defence.

Croydon are at home to the winners of the Dover v Mid-Sussex tie.

Croydon squad:  Sujit Dadar (Riddlesdown), Daniel Turner (Harris CTC), Josh Turner (Ashburton), Gary Andrew (The Archbishop Lanfranc), Matt Sumners (Riddlesown), Dominic Lugard (Woodcote), Arron Toovey (Riddlesdown), Cameron Watt, Johnny Pitt (both Woodcote), Driver (Whitgift), Ibra Sekajja (Ashburton)
Substitutes: Peter Sherlock (Riddlesdown) for Sekaj, Jeuvan Spencer (Selsdon) for Lugard, Lewis Higgins (Edenham) for Dadar

Croydon Schools' Under 13s  1  Aldershot & Farnborough Schools Under 13s  0 (after extra-time) (7th December)

A goal in extra-time by Ashburton striker, Ibra Sekajja, was sufficient to ease Croydon Schools' Football Association's Under 13s into the semi-final of the Surrey Schools' Football Association's Wood Cup in a hard-fought cup tie against a determined Aldershot & Farnborough Schools' team at Croydon Arena last Wednesday week.

It was no more than Croydon deserved for they improved as the game wore on and in a rousing finale they peaked to reach their best form of last season when they were unbeaten in all fourteen matches.

Aldershot threatened mainly from set pieces and when they did pose a threat from rare breakaways they found Croydon's goalkeeper, Sujit Dadar (Riddlesdown) in command.

Croydon skipper, Sam Driver (Whitgift) was in good form, proving a thorn in the visitors' defence and setting up chances with his probing forays, and twice being denied a goal when the Aldershot keeper dashed out to smother the efforts.  Croydon pressed hard for a winner in the second half, with Cameron Watt (Woodcote) involved in much of the midfield action.

Sekajja's winner came four minutes into extra-time and followed a scramble in the Aldershot goalmouth. Peter Sherlock (Riddlesdown), on as substitute, could have scored twice in the second period of extra-time but his mazy runs resulted in him shooting narrowly wide.

Croydon were well marshalled at the back throughout with George Robe and Andrew Ankrah (both Whitgift) in fine form.

Sutton will be Croydon's opponents in the semi-final in early February.

Croydon squad:  Dadar (Riddlesdown), Daniel Turner (Harris CTC), Ankrah, Robe (both Whitgift), Josh Turner (Ashburton), Toovey (Riddlesdown), Andrew (The Archbishop Lanfranc), Watt (Woodcote), Sekajja (Ashburton), Driver (Whitgift), Pitt (Woodcote)
Substitutes:  Sherlock (Riddlesdown), Lugard (Whitgift), Spencer (Selsdon)
Not used:  Higgins (Edenham)

Croydon Schools' Under 13s  1  Waltham Forest Schools' U13s  3 (26th November)

Two defensive errors and a breakaway goal, by visitors, Waltham Forest Schools, saw Croydon's Under 13s lose their first cup tie in two seasons, going down 3-1 in the first round of the London Schools' Football Association's Gill Cup at Greenacres on Saturday.

After a lengthy delay due to Forest's late arrival, Croydon had the better of the early exchanges and Sam Driver (Whitgift) should have shot Croydon into the lead, meeting an accurate cross from Ibra Sekajja (Ashburton), but his low shot was tipped away for a corner.

Croydon's keeper, Sujit Dadar (Riddlesdown) was called into action in the tenth minute, making a fine save.

Forest shocked Croydon by scoring twice in the last five minutes of the first half. The first goal came when the Croydon defenders failed to clear a harmless looking cross, and the second when Dadar's punch under pressure from a corner fell for a Forest player to volley home from ten yards out.

Enforced and tactical half-time changes saw the injured George Robe (Whitgift) replaced at centre back by Gary Andrew (The Archbishop Lanfranc), Juevan Spencer (Selsdon) and Peter Sherlock (Riddlesdown) introduced into the attack and Arron Toovey (Riddlesdown) brought into midfield to replace the hard-working Dominic Lugard (Woodcote).  However, the changes did nothing to improve Croydon's fluency and a well-taken solo goal put Forest 3-0 up, effectively putting an end to Croydon's hopes.

Although Andrew Ankrah (Whitgift) and Johnny Pitt (Woodcote) combined well on several occasions late in the second period, Croydon had to be content with a late consolation goal by Josh Turner (Ashburton) who cleverly lobbed the keeper from 20 yards out.

Croydon squad:  Sujit Dadar, Matt Sumners (both Riddlesdown), George Robe (Whitgift), Daniel Turner (Harris CTC), Andrew Ankrah (Whitgift), Dominic Lugard (Woodcote), Josh Turner (Ashburton), Gary Andrew (The Archbishop Lanfranc), Johnny Pitt (Woodcote), Sam Driver (Whitgift), Ibra Sekajja (Ashburton), Juevan Spencer (Selsdon), Arron Toovey (Riddlesdown), Shaun Brown (Thomas More), Nathan Headley (Ashburton), Peter Sherlock (Riddlesdown)

Croydon Schools' U13s  3  Maidstone Schools' U13s  2 (19th November)

A hard-working display by Croydon's Under 13s booked themselves a place in the second round of the English Schools' South-East Area Wimbledon Challenge Cup when they overcame a determined Maidstone Schools side to win 3-2 at Greenacres Sports & Leisure Club, Warlingham on Saturday morning.

Thanks to diligent pitch preparation by grounds man Tony Osborn, the match was able to go ahead despite a heavy overnight frost.

Croydon overcame the absence of four regular squad members and one of the replacements, Juevan Spencer (Selsdon High) marked his debut with a well-worked goal, in the 24th minute.  But Croydon had a lucky let-off on the stroke of half-time when a mix-up in their defence meant an indirect free-kick - only ten yards out - for a back pass infringement. It was a good chance for Maidstone to equalise but the kick was charged down and Croydon led 1-0 at half-time.

Croydon Team Manager, David Lomas, made some tactical changes at half-time, with Nathan Brown (Thomas More) replacing Spencer and Adrian Thomas (Stanley Technical) taking over from Johnny Pitt (Woodcote).

Although Croydon deserved their 1-0 advantage, they allowed Maidstone to enjoy a ten minute spell of resistance and after Croydon skipper, Sam Driver (Whitgift) had seen his shot saved, Brown shot wide from a good opportunity.

Maidstone equalised fifteen minutes before the end and just when the game looked like going into extra-time Driver struck twice within a minute, with only thee minutes of normal time remaining.

He carved open an opportunity on the edge of the penalty area and deftly struck his shot past a crowded defence, to slip the ball inside the far post. Then he latched on to a great through ball by Gary Andrew (The Archbishop Lanfranc) and Croydon looked home and dry, at 3-1 up.

But late in stoppage time, Maidstone had the last say when the ball flew goal wards into the top corner of the net with replacement Croydon keeper, Lewis Higgins (Edenham) a bemused spectator.

Croydon are away to Brighton in the next round.

Croydon squad:  Sujit Dadar (Riddlesdown), Daniel Turner (Harris CTC), George Robe, (Whitgift), Josh Peck (Woodcote), Andrew Ankrah (Whitgift), Dominic Lugard (Woodcote), Gary Andrew (The Archbishop Lanfranc), Cameron Watt, Johnny Pitt (both Woodcote), Sam Driver (Whitgift), Juevan Spencer (Selsdon),
Replacements: Lewis Higgins (Edenham), Adrian Thomas (Stanley Technical), Matt Sumners (Riddlesdown), Shaun Brown (Thomas More)

Croydon Schools' U13s  2  Bromley Schools' U13s  0 (22nd October)

Croydon Schools' U13s bounced back from their rare defeat at the hands of Luton last week, with a comfortable 2-0 win over neighbours Bromley at Greenacres on Saturday.

Croydon produced most of the pressure in the first half but had no goals to show for their efforts.  The return of Sam Driver (Whigift) boosted Croydon's fire-power.  He set up a good chance for Cameron Watt (Woodcote) in the sixth minute but the finish went narrowly wide.

An Arron Toovey (Riddlesdown) effort was followed by a mazy dribble by Driver, along the visitors' goal line, which was eventually cleared.

Substitute, Ibra Sekajja (Ashburton) shot Croydon into the lead, six minutes after the break, and saw his strike on 13 minutes turned down by an offside decision.

Watt turned in a Dominc Lugard (Woodcote) corner, from close range, to put Croydon 2-0 up, halfway through the second half, whilst at the other end keeper, Sujit Dadar, dealt competently with the few threats posed by the visitors.

Croydon squad:  Higgins (Edenham), Daniel Turner (Harris CTC), Robe (Whitgift), Josh Turner (Ashburton), Ankrah (Whitgift), Toovey (Riddlesdown), Andrew (The Archbishop Lanfranc), Watt (Woodcote), Pitt (Woodcote), Sherlock (Riddlesdown), Driver (Whitgift)
Substitutes:  Dadar (Riddlesdown), Thomas (Stanley Technical), Sekajja (Ashburton), Peck (Woodcote), Lugard (Woodcote)

Croydon Schools' U13s  0  Luton Schools' U13s  3  (15th October)

Croydon's Under 13s went down to their first defeat for over twelve months, losing 3-0, to a strong Luton side in a friendly fixture, also at Greenacres.

Croydon had an early setback when Johnny Pitt (Woodcote) was adjudged to have tripped a Luton player in the penalty area, in the fifth minute. Luton made no mistake from the spot kick.

Luton proved to be a very capable side, dominating the midfield area, and it was no surprise when they went 2-0 up halfway through the first half.

Peter Sherlock (Riddlesdown) and Ibra Sekajja (Ashburton) combined well up front on a couple of occasions but Croydon's attacks were limited and at the interval - faced with playing up the slope - Croydon faced a tough task to rescue their unbeaten record.

Croydon shaped much better after the break and Sekajja twice went close. Luton scored in the last minute when Croydon's outstanding player - central defender, George Robe (Whitgift) - made a rare mistake.

Croydon squad:  Sujit Dadar (Riddlesdown), Daniel Turner (Harris CTC), George Robe (Whitgift), Josh Peck (Woodcote), Andrew Ankrah (Whitgift), Arron Toovey (Riddlesdown), Gary Andrew (The Archbishop Lanfranc), Cameron Watt (Woodcote), Peter Sherlock (Riddlesdown), Ibra Sekajja (Ashburton), Johnny Pitt (Woodcote), Adrian Thomas (Stanley Technical), Dominic Lugard (Woodcote), Shaun Brown (Thomas More), Nathan Headley (Ashburton)
