2006/2007 Season - Under 11's

Woking Schools' Under 11s 1  Croydon Schools' Under 11s 0

Croydon Schools' Football Association's Under 11s came second best in the final of the Surrey Schools' Lancaster Cup competition, against a well-organised Woking side at Fulham Football Club's Motspur Park training ground last Thursday, losing 1-0.

Croydon went close to scoring in the first half, with long range shots from Derek Tieku and Haydn Dickinson (Parish Church). Michael Gray (St James the Great) saw his shot rebound off a post on the stroke of half-time.  The score was goalless at half-time.

Woking made a rare foray in to Croydon's penalty area, and when Croydon failed to clear their lines Woking made them pay, tapping home from close range.

The goal spurred Woking on and goalkeeper, Ben Giles (Downsview) was called upon to make several saves. Croydon pressed hard for the equaliser, with Nathan Antwi (Beulah) and Tieku going close.

Croydon threw everything forward in a bid to take the tie into extra-time, but they were unable to gel as a unit and found the Woking goalkeeper in top form.

Croydon squad:  Giles (Downsview), Jones (Smitham), Johnstone (Orchard Way), Obaye-Daley (Whitgift), Smith (Roke), Antwi (Beulah), Dickinson (Parish Church), Tieku (Courtwood), Stergiou (Ridgeway), Gray (St James the Great), Gee (Ridgeway), Nwanokwu, Worrell (both Downsview), Wynter (Davidson)

Sutton Schools U11s 3  Croydon Schools U11s 5

Croydon Schools' Football Association's gained their first silverware when their Under 11 borough side ousted neighbours, Sutton, 5-3, at Carshalton on Saturday to retain the Surrey Schools Sydney Black League trophy.

Croydon made hard work of the task of taking a point to lift the trophy, trailing 2-1 at half-time having spurned several good chances.

Leading goal scorer, Derek Tieku (Courtwood) shot Croydon into an early lead, notching his tally to 23 goals, but Sutton hit back with goals from Harry Middleton (Rushy Meadow) and Simon Mander (All Saints).

Sutton's goalkeeper denied Croydon as the visitors pressed for an equaliser, pulling off fine saves against efforts by Haydn Dickinson (Parish Church) and Conor Wilkinson (Purley Oaks).

Michael Gray (St James the Great) secured the equalising goal from the edge of the penalty area, eight minutes in to the second half and Croydon eased ahead seven minutes later when Tommy Johnstone (Orchard Way) scored directly from a corner.

It was 4-2 to Croydon three minutes later when a Dickinson effort was only partially saved.

A flowing move by Croydon was finished with a goal from Obi Kwenokwu (Downside), as Croydon pressed ahead but there was time for another goal by Sutton, by Stuart Smith (Cheam Common) making the score line, 5-3 in Croydon's favour.

This win is Croydon's third victory over Sutton, in the last five weeks and means that they preserve their unbeaten league record.

Croydon now hope to qualify for the finals of the English Schools' Football Association's Sainsbury's 7-a-side inter-district competition when they travel to Greenwich tomorrow (Saturday) for the South-East Area regional qualifying event.

The high-flying Under 11s have a Surrey Schools Lancaster Cup final to contest against Woking Schools and take on Barking & Dagenham in the semi-final of the London Schools' Crisp Shield (March 25th).

With the borough's secondary school teams still engaged in the closing stages of nine competitions (including four finals) there is the potential to gain more silverware to display at the association's Presentation Evening at Archbishop Tenison's School on May 12th.

Croydon Schools' Under 11s 3 Orpington Schools' Under 11s 0

Croydon Schools' Football Association's Under 11's cruised to a 3-0 victory over Orpington in the second round of the English Schools' Football Association's South-East Area Gills Trophy at Croydon Arena last week.

Orpington started brightly with Croydon struggling to find their shape but ten minutes into the game it was Croydon who created the first opportunity when top goal scorer, Keiran Scantlebury was left unmarked in the area only to see his shot superbly saved by the Orpington keeper.  This seemed to spur the Croydon side on and Orpington found themselves under increasing pressure.

Duane Williams (Atwood) was a constant menace down the left flank and when he skilfully played the ball back to Luke Turner (Royal Russell), Turner crossed to Ollie Thornton (Woodcote) whose fierce volley smacked against the upright. Seconds later the move was repeated but this time Thornton made no mistake, blasting the ball into the net to put Croydon 1-0 up.

The second half was much the same with the tremendous Robbie Burley (Woodcote) and Jack Hanmore (Roke) rarely troubled at the back. Croydon forced a corner through great interplay between Thornton and Bradley Robinson (Chipstead Valley) down the right and once again the left foot of Turner swung in a magnificent ball leaving the Orpington defence in disarray, forcing one of them to score an "own goal".

Croydon now looked well in command and Gathercole (Woodside) and Dion Conroy (Ridgeway) bossed the midfield, forcing errors in the Orpington defence.

Croydon sealed the victory when another Turner corner was met by goal machine Scantlebury to secure a place in the semi-final.

Croydon squad:  Alex White (Atwood), Bradley Robinson (Chipstead Valley), Robbie Burley (Woodcote), Jack Hanmore (Roke), Luke Turner (Royal Russell), Ollie Thornton (Woodcote), Dion Conroy (Ridgeway), Conner Gathercole (Woodside), Duane Williams (Atwood), Harvey Hurst (Orchard Way), Keiran Scantlebury (Davidson), Micah Roye (All Saints), Ryan Godfrey (St Thomas Becket), Ben Brook (Chipstead Valley)

Croydon Schools' U11s 5  Sutton Schools' U11s 1 (17th March)

Croydon Schools Under 11's gave Sutton a master class in football on Saturday at Warlingham, putting on a fine display with a 5-1 victory to send them into the Surrey Schools' FA Lancaster Cup Final.

Sutton never got out of the starting blocks, with Croydon exerting pressure on the Sutton back four from start to finish.  Croydon's first goal came when Ollie Thornton (Woodcote) crossed for the unmarked Duane Williams (Atwood) to finish sweetly.

The second goal came just before half time from a Dion Conroy (Ridgeway) free-kick which was met on the volley by Croydon's top scorer Keiran Scantlebury (Davidson).

Croydon continued to dominate after the break. Thornton and Turner (Royal Russell) were particular handfuls, giving the Sutton fullbacks a torrid time. Harvey Hurst (Orchard Way) was on hand to net Croydon's third from a Thornton cross and Micah Roye made it four when Conroy evaded several tackles before cutting the ball back for him to volley home.

With Croydon pushing on for more goals Sutton grabbed a consolation goal after keeper White miss-kicked in an otherwise faultless display. Croydon were keen to add more to their tally and Thornton grabbed the goal he deserved when he danced his way into the box and netted at the near post.

Croydon now face Godalming in the final.

Croydon squad:  Alex White (Atwood), Bradley Robinson (Chipstead Valley), Robbie Burley (Woodcote), Jack Hanmore (Roke), Luke Turner (Royal Russell), Ollie Thornton (Woodcote), Conner Gathercole (Woodside), Dion Conroy (Ridgeway), Duane Williams (Atwood), Harvey Hurst (Orchard Way), Keiran Scantlebury (Davidson), Ryan Godfrey (St Thomas Becket), Ben Brook (Chipstead Valley), Micah Roye (All Saints)

Croydon's Under 11s finished their Surrey Schools' Sydney Black league programme with a resounding 4-1 win over visitors, Woking Schools at Shelton Sports & Leisure, Warlingham on Saturday morning,.

Woking were penned in to their own half for most of the first fifteen minutes and it was no surprise when Croydon's leading goal scorer, Kieran Scantlebury (Davidson) set up a chance for Micah Roye (All Saints) who fired home from the edge of the penalty area.  Roye scored again two minutes before the break, to send Croydon into half-time with a 2-0 margin.

Woking reduced the arrears with a fine solo run two minutes after half-time when Remi Attah (Keston) made it 3-0, the result never looked in doubt, with the Woking goalkeeper making good saves to deny.

Jamie Bakhit (Ridgeway) finalised the verdict as Croydon celebrated the retention of the Sydney Black Trophy.

Croydon's Under 11s returned to winning ways with a splendid 1-0 win over neighbours and rivals, Sutton in a Surrey Schools' Sydney Black league fixture at Mill Lane, Carshalton, on Saturday.

The solitary goal came in the twentieth minute when Kieran Scantlebury (Davidson) scored from close range, at the second attempt, having seen his first effort partly saved.

Croydon had started slowly and were unlucky to be on level terms, failing to get out of their own half in the first ten minutes.

Dion Conroy (Ridgeway) and Ollie Thornton (Woodcote) shot narrowly wide as Croydon finished the first half strongly.

Sutton improved after the break but found Croydon's back four of Robbie Burley (Woodcote), Jack Hanmore (Roke), Ben Brook (Chipstead Valley) and Ryan Godfrey, (St Thomas Beckett) in good form, whilst Croydon keeper, Alex White (Atwood) had an impressive match.

Croydon skipper, Connor Gathercole (Woodside) and winger Duane Williams (Atwood) should have made the points watertight late on in the match but Croydon were full value for the valuable three points.

Croydon squad:  Alex White (Atwood), Ben Brook (Chipstead Valley), Robbie Burley (Woodcote), Jack Hanmore (Roke), Ryan Godfrey (St Thomas Beckett), Ollie Thornton (Woodcote), Dion Conray (Ridgeway), Connor Gathercole (Woodside), Duane Williams (Atwood), Harvey Hurst (Orchard Way), Kieran Scantlebury (Davidson), Bradley Robinson (Chipstead Valley), Michael Roye (All Saints)

Croydon Schools' Under 11s found the going tough as they crashed 4-2 to Islington Schools in the London Schools Crisp Shield at Edenham High School.

Islington took an early lead but Croydon created numerous chances only to find the goalkeeper in superlative form, but Islington increased their lead before half-time.

The chances continued to flow for Croydon after the interval but found themselves with a mountain to climb when the visitors went 3-0 up.

Croydon pulled a goal back when Kieran Scantlebury (Davidson) was on target, and played with great determination but Islington scored again, taking advantage of slack defensive play.

Conner Gathercole (Woodside) and Ryan Godfrey (St Thomas Beckett) began to control the midfield and Jamie Bakhit (Ridgeway) netted for Croydon with a clever free-kick.

Ashford Schools' U11s 2   Croydon Schools' U11s 6 (2nd December)

Croydon's Under 11s hit the goal trail at Ashford, winning 6-2 in the first round of the Gills Shield on Saturday morning.

Although Ashford should have taken an early lead but Croydon got well on top and when Luke Turner (Royal Russell) floated a free-kick into the path of Harvey Hurst (Orchard Way) he placed the ball wide of the home goalkeeper.

Croydon grabbed a second when skipper Conner Gathercole (Woodside) danced his way past three defenders. When his shot was parried, striker, Kieran Scantlebury (Davidson) swivelled neatly, scoring with a left foot effort.

A fine save by Alex White (Atwood) denied Ashford.

Croydon had the major share of possession after the break. Ollie Thornton (Woodside) had a shot on goal blocked but Jack Hanmore (Roke) was on hand to tap the ball home from close range.

Ashford reduced the arrears but Croydon got their second wind and further goals came their way when Duane Williams (Atwood) and Turner were on target.

Ashford netted a late consolation goal, but Croydon's placed in the second round was already assured.

Bexley Schools' Under 11s 1  Croydon Schools' Under 11s 2 (11th November)

Croydon Schools' Football Association's Under 11 borough eased their way into the second round of the London Schools' Football Association's Crisp Shield when they came from behind to secure a 2-1 away win over Bexley Schools at Sidcup on Saturday morning.

Bexley caught Croydon's defence napping in the tenth minute which resulted in Croydon 'keeper Alex White (Atwood), unable to do anything about a looping cross-cum shot.

Bexley continued to get on top but failed to create clear cut chances, whilst at the other end Croydon were restricted to occasional incursions, which failed to trouble the home defence.

Croydon gradually got on top after the interval but when Duane Williams blasted his shot over the bar after being set up by Kie3ran Scantlebury (Davidson) it looked as though it wasn't going to be Croydon's day.

But Croydon were playing with confidence and determined to get back on level terms. Luke Turner (Royal Russell) created an opening for Williams, who atoned for his earlier error, scoring from close range.

The goal lifted Croydon's spirits and when man of the match, Micah Roye (All Saints), won the ball in midfield he sent Scantlebury on his way. Scantlebury's shot was parried by the Bexley goalie but Harvey Hurst (Orchard Way) was on hand to pounce on the rebound and score from close range.

Croydon entertain Islington in the second round.

Croydon Schools' Football Association's Under 11 borough side began their Surrey Schools' Sydney Black League fixtures with a fine 2-0 verdict over Woking at Byfleet on Saturday morning.

After early pressure from Woking, Croydon settled down, with the outstanding Connor Gathercole (Woodside) commanding the midfield and providing chances for the strikers.

But it wasn't until the 20th minute that Croydon went a goal up. Debutant Duane Williams (Atwood) broke through the Woking defence and laid on a chance for Kieran Scantlebury (Davidson), which he gleefully accepted.

Croydon got on top after the interval, but missed numerous chances. There was, however, always the chance that Woking might break away and equalise but stout defending by Robbie Burley (Woodcote) and Jack Hanmore (Roke) kept Croydon in front.

In the closing minutes new boy Mikah Roye (All Saints) laid on a clever pass for Ollie Thornton (Woodcote) to drive a low cross into the penalty area, where Gathercole slotted home to make certain of three points for Croydon.

Croydon squad:  Alex White (Atwood), Liam Lundgren (Woodcote), Ryan Godfrey (St Thomas Beckett), Jack Hanmore (Roke), Robbie Burley (Woodcote), Ben Brook (Chipstead Valley), Ollie Thornton (Woodcote), Bradley Robinson (Chipstead Valley), Connor Gathercole (Woodside). Sutton Schools' U11s 3   Croydon Schools' U11s 3

A late equaliser robbed Croydon Schools' Under 11s from an away win against neighbours and rivals, Sutton Schools in a friendly fixture at Mill Lane, Carshalton on Saturday morning.

Croydon, playing their first match of the season, conceded two goals without reply in the first half.

But it was a different story after the interval, with Croydon scoring three times. Their first goal came following good work down the left flank by Luke Turner (Royal Russell). His deflected shot was tapped in by Ollie Thornton (Woodcote).

Croydon were now in full flow, with Remi Attah (Keston) and Connor Gathercole (Woodside) commanding the midfield area, and Bradley Robinson (Chipstead Valley) gave Sutton plenty of trouble, on the right.

Mason Cornish (Fairchildes) equalised for Croydon, and then shot them into a 3-2 lead, finishing another fine Thornton move and scoring from close range.
