Girls Football - 13th December 2006

No fewer than nineteen teams took part in the inaugural Croydon schools Girls Under 12 and Under 13 five-a-side tournament at "Goals" Soccer Centre, Beckenham on Wednesday.

Virgo Fidelis (Upper Norwood) qualified for both finals but finished runners-up in each. They lost by a single goal to Woodcote High School (Coulsdon) but it needed a penalty shoot-out to decide their final encounter, against Shirley High School.

With girls football in the borough now under the aegis of the mainstream Croydon Schools' FA, the game looks set to really take off next term, when inter-school leagues are planned.
