Croydon Schools' Sports Council

The Croydon Schools' Sports Council is a co-ordinating committee comprised of officers from the Borough's various schools' sporting associations.  It provides its members with an opportunity for report and discussion and it is also responsible for submitting an application to Croydon Council for an annual sports grant.

A booklet serves as a directory of the Schools' Sports Associations and includes the constitution of the CSSC.  It also gives a summary of the allocation of the Authority's Sports grant over the past eight years.  It shows the diversity of school sport in Croydon and the commitment that many teachers give to the development of sporting activities.

Excellence in Sport Awards Evening (6th March 2006)

Croydon's Mayor, Cllr Maggie Mansell, presented the awards when Croydon Schools' Sports Council held their fourth annual Excellence in Sports Awards Evening in the Council Chamber at the Town Hall on Monday evening.

Over fifty Under 16 (Year 11) students, drawn from sixteen schools throughout the borough, received mementoes to recognise their achievements in gaining county honours and above in their own sport.

For the first time, the CSSC teamed up with Croydon Sports Council and Sportslink, to include the London Borough of Croydon's Long Service to Sport Awards, which were inaugurated ten years ago, to recognise significant contributions made by volunteers to the organisation and development of sport in Croydon over a long period of time.

Six of the ten member sports, which constitute the Croydon Schools' Sports Council, were represented - Athletics, Basketball, Cricket, Football, Hockey and Netball.

Biggest representation came from Hockey, with fourteen county players, ten of them being from Whitgift School, South Croydon, closely followed by Athletics (11) and Football (9 students).

Amongst the athletes were Monique Davis, from Bensham Manor School, who has been part of the Great Britain Paralympics team and had finished 7th in the Surrey Schools' Cross Country event. There were also awards for St Giles School students, Lisa Harrison and Andrew Lawton.

Several of the athletes had gained gold medals in Surrey Schools championships, whilst Trinity School's Ryszard Buk had finished sixth in the English Schools' Athletic Association Pole Vault event.

Five of the seven basketball players came from one school, The Archbishop Lanfranc School, West Croydon, with the other two on the roll at Harris City Technology College in Upper Norwood.

No fewer than nine Croydon Schools' Football Association's current Under 16 borough team have played for the Surrey Schools' Football Association's county side this season. Special mention was made of Jeffrey Imudia of Haling Manor High School, South Croydon, hoping to make his way as a player at Arsenal Football Club, and twins, Oliver and Daniel Olusanya (St Joseph's College), plus Tom Ince of the Archbishop Lanfranc School, who had captained Croydon and Surrey teams.

James Balmforth (Royal Russell) who had topped the averages on the London Schools' tour of Sri Lanka at Christmas, was the sole cricket representative.

County netball players, Katie Lister (Croydon High School), Zoe Clements (Edenham) and Laura Winnan (Woodcote) completed the list of winners.

The Long Service Award winners were: Roger Hurrion and Keith Bartley (Schools Football), Derek Stevens (Addiscombe Cricket Club), Lon Moir - kingpin of Monks Hill Table Tennis Club, Linda Harrison (Athletics), Anne Reader (Swimming), Harry Baker (Schools Basketball) and Lawrie Wray (Angling).

The Mayor congratulated the students on their achievements, urged them to improve their skills but also advised them to concentrate on their academic work.

Cllr Mansell also paid tribute to the support given by parents, and the countless hours of work by volunteers, which provides opportunities for the young people in the borough.

The event was organised by former head teacher at West Thornton, Peter Westlake MBE, long-serving Chairman of the Croydon Schools' Sports Council, who had received a Long Service award he, two years ago.
