Under 18s - 2008 Season

Croydon Schools' Under 18s 160 for 4  Croydon Teachers 164 for 4 (27th June)

Croydon Schools' Cricket Association's first representative 20/20 match between the Under 18s and the Teachers Xi turned out to be a thriller, being decided off the last ball.

The annual fixture was played at Trinity School's Sandilands ground on Friday.

With the scores level, a tie looked a possibility, with the last ball to be bowled, but Grant Beresford-Miller (Trinity) drove the ball through the covers to win the match by four wickets.

The students started well, scoring 62 off their first nine overs, before George Edwards (St Joseph's College) was dismissed for 25.

Chris Hurrion hit an aggressive 73 until caught off Darryl Bate (Woodcote) but the boys finished on a creditable total of 160 for 4.

The Teachers' innings followed a similar pattern, with an opening partnership of 72 off 10 overs, before Edwards chipped to take two wickets, bowling out Jim Houldey (Haling Manor) and Jonathan McInerney (Trinity)

With the Teachers Xl on 134 off 18 overs the odds looked to be on victory for them.

But Trinity PE master, Grant Beresford-Miller, caught first ball off a no-ball, took the match by the scruff of the neck. The Teachers never gave up and took the score on to 145 for 4 with one over remaining.

Beresford-Miller led the charge, hoisting two sixes in the last over, to add to two previous sixes and two boundaries, and nineteen came off the last over as the bemused students were edged out, from what had seemed to be a winning position.
