Under 16s - 2008 SeasonWaltham Forest Schools' Under 16s 176 Croydon Schools' Under 16s 178 for 3 (22nd July)Chris Hurrion (Archbishop Tenison's chose the perfect setting and occasion for his maiden century on Tuesday. Playing his last match for Croydon Schools' Cricket Association's Under 16s, against Waltham Forest Schools at the picturesque Arundel Castle cricket ground, Hurrion played a key role in Croydon's seven wicket win. The left-handed opener scored 114 not out as Croydon eased to a seven wicket win, with 2.5 overs to spare in this 40 overs a side annual fixture, which marks the end of Croydon's representative programme each season.
Losing the toss, it looked as though Croydon might be put to the sword on a perfect batting strip, under a cloudless sky, but they stuck to their task well and pouched some crucial catches. It was Hurrion who took a stunning left-handed catch at backward point to peg back Forest to 66 for 3 off 16 overs. In a late flurry Forest tested the Croydon bowlers, but Steven Cox (Shirley High) handled his bowling attack well. Although the opening attack by Haling Manor pace bowlers, Hammad Azam and Rafiullah Ahmadi had proved expensive, change bowlers Matthew Winter (Archbishop Tenison's) (1 for 22 off 5 overs) and Jack Coles (also Tenison's) 2 for 8 off 8 overs, put a break on Forest and prevented them posting a too challenging target. Cephas Azariah (The Archbishop Lanfranc) got in on the act with his well-flighted off spinners, restricting the batsmen to 10 runs off his 5 overs. Antony Starnes (St Joseph's College) took two late wickets, and two run outs in the last over set Croydon a target of 177 for victory. Croydon paced their innings to perfection and although they lost the wickets of Cox, Sujit Dadar (Riddlesdown) and John Foggarty (St Joseph's), Hurrion played a determined innings. The boundaries had remained unchanged from the Sussex v Somerset Pro 40 match on Sunday and scoring fours was not easy, but once the ball had pierced the field, the ball tended to run with lightening speed to the boundary. Croydon's coach, Roger Coles paid tribute to Hurrion's innings and the Croydon team effort.
Croydon squad: Steven Cox (Shirley High), Sujit Dadar (Riddlesdown), Matthew Winter, Chris Hurrion, Jack Coles (all Archbishop Tenison's), Hammad Azam, Rafiullah Ahmadi (both Haling Manor), Antony Starnes, John Foggarty, Omar Green (all St Joseph's College), Michael Ridley (Edenham) Cephas Azariah (The Archbishop Lanfranc) Further information from David Lomas on 020 8656 8857 or email: dalomas@tiscali.co.uk Back to Cricket Home Page ![]()
