Croydon Schools Cricket Association2006 SeasonCroydon Schools' Under 18s 165 for 7 Croydon Teachers 163 for 9 (16th June)Croydon Schools' Cricket Association's Under 18s eased their way to an impressive last over win by two runs when they took on the cream of Croydon Teachers in the annual challenge match at Trinity School's Sandilands ground on Friday. Eight runs were needed for victory off the last over in this 30 overs a side match. Students' skipper, Alex De Warrenne (Trinity) entrusted the bowling to school colleague, Chris Hall, who had been expensive, conceding 33 runs for one wicket in his previous five overs. But pace bowler Hall roared in to rip out tail-enders, Andrew Cook (Archbishop Tenison's) and Roman Parker (St Joseph's College) with Yorkers in successive balls. Five runs were needed off the last ball, but last man, Peter Cook (St Joseph's College) could only manage two runs and the students were home and dry for their third win on the trot. Earlier in the match, the students' prospects of posting a competitive total had looked unlikely as they struggled with their score on 94 for 7 with eight overs left. But Trinity pair, Ben Bateman and Robert Mugridge rescued them with an unbeaten partnership of 71 runs. Bateman hammered the wilting Teachers' attack for four 6's and four 4's in an unbeaten 47, whilst Mugridge played an important supporting role, making 24, including four boundaries, as the students total closed on 165 for 7. In reply, the Teachers looked well set with their score on 141 for 4 after 24 overs, thanks to a partnership of 57 by skipper, Roger Wallbank (Edenham) and Grant Beresford-Miller (Trinity). But then came what proved to be the turning point, when Wallbank departed to a splendid one-handed catch at square-leg by Minesh Patel (Edenham) off Jake Harris (also Edenham) for 44. Beresford-Miller went on to make 42, and when he departed, with the score on 156 for 7, ten runs were needed off 17 balls. Tension mounted but the students held their nerve. Slow left arm spinner, De Warrenne returned best figures of 3 for 13 off his maximum six overs, with Hall returning figures of 3 for 38, off six, and Harris 2 for 22 off 5 overs. Teams:Under 18s: Alex De Warrenne, Kunal Patel, Chris Hall, Christian Bond, Robert Mugridge, Ben Bateman (all Trinity), Jake Harris, Minesh Patel (both Edenham), Faisal Mughal, Vishal Patel (both St Joseph's College), Parag-Raj Raval (Harris CTC), Ghazi Khan (The Archbishop Lanfranc)
