Croydon Schools Cricket Association

2006 Season

Waltham Forest Schools' Under 16s 154  -  Croydon Schools' Under 16s 158 for 6

Croydon Schools' Cricket Association's annual match against Waltham Forest Schools' Under 16s in the picturesque surroundings of Arundel Castle, West Sussex was made all the more enjoyable by virtue of a sound four wickets victory at the sun-drenched county ground.

Croydon skipper, Adam Benjamin surprisingly invited Waltham Forest to bat in this 40 overs-a-side encounter. The ploy of opening the attack with leg-spinner, Parag-Raj Raval (Harris CTC) paid dividends when wicket-keeper, Robert Mugridge (Trinity) took a smart catch to put Waltham Forest on 19 for 1 in the sixth over.

Waltham Forest were content to make slow to medium progress but their lack of ambition played into Croydon's hands and they went in to lunch at 101 for 4 off thirty overs.

Wickets fell steadily with Croydon's bowling and catching being keen The last five wickets fell for 29 runs, with the Essex boys all out for 154 in the last over. Vishal Raval (St Joseph's College) was the pick of a most competent Croydon attack, returning figures of 4 for 19 off his eight overs.

Croydon soon got over the loss of Sayandan Sivayogarajah (Trinity), comprehensively bowled, with only two on the board but Benjamin was in imperious form, frequently driving with great confidence, and well supported by Jon Coles (Archbishop Tenison's) who made 15.

Coles departed for 15 but Benjamin found willing partners in Trinity players, Fahran Hasan (18) and Christian Bond (24) and although Croydon briefly wobbled on 124 for 6, following the departure of Benjamin for 55, Jake Harris (Edenham) and David Firth (Trinity) saw them home with some well-struck blows. Harris - unable to bowl because of a sore back, justified his place in the team with an unbeaten 26 in just over 30 minutes as Croydon eased their way to victory with nine overs in hand.

Croydon's Team Manager, the ubiquitous David Lomas, said "This was a pleasing performance, especially as the squad included no fewer than five Under 15s.  Special mention should be made of coach, Sailish Raval and skipper, Adam Benjamin."
