Croydon Schools Cricket Association

Croydon Schools' Cricket Association's programme of inter-school league and cup finals came to a conclusion last week with nine finals, courtesy of Trinity School and hard work by their Sandilands grounds man, Richard Waltons, and school venue head grounds man, Vernon Verherey.

There were also two inter-district matches. Although some matches were adversely affected by the eccentric weather, most finals were completed and featured some outstanding individual performances.

Leading the way was 13yrs old Aman Shinwari of Stanley Technical Boys High School who, coming in at number 4 in a 25-overs Year 8 Cup Final against St Joseph's College, hammered an amazing 174 not out in Stanley's imposing total of 232 for 6.  Although St Joseph's did their best in reply, with opener, Brendan Kenlock, scoring 81 not out in their response of 137 for 2.

Shinwari's innings had CSCA officials looking through records, but the best they could come up with was a score of 196 in a 30 overs match for Neil Wilson of the former Norbury Manor Boys High School almost 30 years ago.

Steve Box, Head of PE at Stanley, proudly pointed out that in his school's centenary and final season, that this has been one of their most successful seasons. But Whitgift overwhelmed Stanley in the Year 10 Cup Final, bowling them out for 62, and reaching their lowly target, without loss in 10.4 overs.

It was also a good season for Woodcote High School (Coulsdon), St Joseph's College (Upper Norwood) and Haling Manor (South Croydon).

Haling Manor's Year 9 team completed a league and cup double over St Joseph's. In the league event, Haling Manor's score of 130 for 3 gave them a 7-wicket win. Hammad Azam scored 66 not out and was well supported by Kabir Ahmadi (44 not out). Ahmadi then capped a fine individual performance, returning a bowling performance of 5 for 15.

Woodcote pulled off a convincing 7 wicket win in the Year 10 League Final, against St Joseph's College, restricting them to 111 for 8 off their 25 overs. William Timms took 2 for 14 for Woodcote, whilst St Joseph's innings was held together by George Edwards (51).  Woodcote's reply was built on innings of 52 not out by Amar Gujral, Timms (25) and Chris Blackler (18 not out).

The Year 8 League Final was won by Haling Manor who scored 177 for 6 and then bowled Shirley High School out for 67. For Haling Manor, George Farrell scored 56 and Sam Dennis took six wickets.

Riddlesdown High School (Purley) were winners of the Year 7 Cup Final v St Joseph's.

Primary Schools Final:  Trinity U11s 93  -  Elmhurst 97 for 8

Elmhurst cut short Trinity School's bid to make it three consecutive victories in the CSCA Primary Final with a two-wicket win in an exciting final at Trinity School last week.

Trinity were bowed out for 93, with Finn Fitzgerald top-scoring on 22. Will Hesketh and Alistair Connor supported with 16 runs each For Elmhurst, their captain, Shaam Tandon, returned excellent figures of 5 for 22, ably supported by Ashwyn Nair (2 for 20).

When Elmhurst replied, Luca Picciano held the innings together for some time, with a patient 27 but when he unfortunately trod on his stumps, three quick run outs and the loss of other wickets swung the game towards Trinity.  But Elmhurst rallied, and added 21 vital runs to edge home with two wickets in hand, and seven overs remaining.

CSCA President, Edward Handley, described the exciting finish and performances by both teams as "the best Primary Final for some time."
