2004 Cricket SeasonAnnual ReportThe most outstanding and memorable match of the 2004 season was the annual U15 Hobbs Trophy match at The Oval, against South London. Croydon's total of 260 for 5, off their allocation of 40 overs, was based on an unbeaten score of 117 by Kunal Patel (Trinity). In one of the closest ever finishes in the 32 years history of this annual fixture, South London needed a six to win off the last ball, with the last pair at the wicket. They could only manage a boundary, and so Croydon won by one run. This win meant a record seven victories in succession for Croydon. In other district matches, the Under 11s shone by winning the "double" - the London Schools' Hansford Trophy (v Havering) and the Surrey Schools' Prosser Hansford Trophy (v Woking). The Under 13's won the Surrey Schools' Boulden Trophy (Croydon 170 for 5, South London 152) and the Surrey Schools' TSB Trophy (Croydon 144 for 4, South London 122 for 9) was also won by Croydon. The Under 12s, who had registered a 32 runs win over the full London side earlier in the season, turned in a disappointing performance against South London in the Surrey Schools' Nescafe Trophy, losing by a decisive margin of 75 runs. Croydon's Under 16s performed well against Waltham Forest at the picturesque county ground at Arundel Castle, bowling out the opposition for 124 and reaching their target for the loss of only one wicket. Croydon Teachers were taught a lesson by the Under 19s (Croydon 162 for 8; Teachers 160 for 8). Thanks are due to Alan Wood, who is stepping down as team manager for the Teachers' X1 after doing the job for several seasons. The Secondary League Finals were adversely affected by rain, but thanks to Croydon M.O.'s they were completed in September. Thanks are due to Trinity School, for allowing us to use Sandilands again. Special thanks, also, to the Head Groundsman, Mr Vernon Veheary and his staff for their tireless efforts to get matches played in the sometimes wet conditions: this is much appreciated. The Archbishop Lanfranc School reached three of the four finals. (Please see appendix for final league tables and results). Cup competition results were:
Our grateful thanks are due to Jon Atkinson (League Secretary) and Jim Hammond (Cup KO Secretary) who were in charge of these Secondary competitions. Elmhurst School won the Primary League Final, for the ninth consecutive time, beating Woodcote Junior School by five wickets (Woodcote 86 for 7, Elmhurst 87 for 5). The match was played at the usual venue of Addiscombe Cricket Club, for which we thank them. Martin Cooper (Park Hill), who has acted as Primary League Secretary for many years, is standing down, having secured another teaching post at Portslade, Sussex. We thank him for all his endeavours and extend our best wishes to him in his new post. The John Rice Memorial Trophy, was won by medium pace bowler, Jack Johnson (Woodcote Junior School) who returned figures of 5 wickets for four runs in four overs, playing for Croydon Schools' Under 11s, against Mole Valley Schools. Jon Atkinson Head of PE at The Archbishop Lanfranc School, was the recipient of the "Croydon Advertiser Team Manager of the Year" award. Harry Maber, has filled the post of Honorary Treasurer, with the quiet approach and professional manner, even though handicapped with a distinct lack of financial acumen shown by the Honorary Secretary. Our matches have undoubtedly been enhanced by being able to call on an elite band of qualified umpires, some of whom we have over-worked. We are most grateful for the receipt of grants from Croydon Council, via Croydon Schools' Sports Council, and from Croydon Playing Fields Association. The CPFA grant has been used to purchase cricket balls. We have been able to secure valuable publicity for the association's activities, via the web site operated for us by personnel at Taberner House. We are most grateful to Jackie Jones, in particular, for her speedy work, and quiet efficiency. The Croydon Advertiser and the Croydon Guardian have been generous towards the association, in affording us space in their weekly columns and we acknowledge their much-valued support and co-operation. We should like to congratulate the players on their fine sporting attitude shown in inter-school and inter-district fixtures, and their parents who have supported them, plus all teachers and others in the borough who have kept the CSCA flag flying. Lastly - and by no means least - congratulations are due to Edward Handley, our President and Chairman - on the award of the MBE in the Queens' Birthday Honours List, an honour much deserved. David Lomas (Hon Secretary) ![]()
