Duppas Hill Recreation Ground
Located in Waddon, roads run along three side, Duppas Hill Road, Hillside Road, and Cooper Road Duppas Hill was the first recreation ground in Croydon, it was purchased from the Ecclesiastical Commissioners by the Croydon Board of Health in 1865. Today the open space is given mainly to sports fields but this sporting tradition appears to have a very long history. Tradition has it that tournaments were held on the slopes of Duppas Hill until 1286 when Lord William de Warenne was encountered and, it is believed, treacherously slain by his enemies (tournaments were arranged to ensure no serious harm to the participants). Many of Croydon's festivals were held on the site of Duppas Hill, for example for many years Sir Frederick Edridge gave an annual firework display and earlier bonfires celebrated local and national events. In 1910 Lord Roberts presented colours to the 4th Queens Volunteer Battalion.
