The Trowel

The Trowel has a silver blade, engraved on the fact with a view of the new buildings in a circle, parcel gilt, and framed with Renaissance ornament, beneath which is inscribed 'Croydon Municipal Buildings, 9th June, 1892 (being the 9th anniversary of the first meeting of the Council).

On the reverse is engraved a monogram of the Mayor's initials, and this inscription: 'Presented to Frederick T. Edridge, Esq., J.P., Mayor of the County Borough of Croydon, on the occasion of his laying the foundation-stone of the Municipal Buildings, Courts, and Free Library, June 9th, 1892.  Charles Henman, Architect, C.M. Elborough, Town Clerk.'

The handle, of ivory, is handsomely carved on the upper part, in front, with the arms and crest of the Borough, the mantling or lambrequin of which falls gracefully over the lower portion; the remainder is powdered with a diaper of Cs and civic crowns.  The motto 'Sanitate Crescamus,' is engraved on the silver at the junction of the handle with the blade.

It was designed by Mr. H. Walter Lonsdale, from suggestions by the Architect.
