How the Mayor is elected

The Lord Mayor's position has most recently been laid down by the Local Government Act 1972.  This requires:

  • that he shall be elected annually by the Council from among the Councillors
  • his term of office is for one year, commencing at the Annual Meeting of Council on the third Wednesday in May
  • that he shall continue to be a member of the Council during his term of office
  • the Lord Mayor be given precedence in all places in the borough, but not so as to prejudicially affect Her Majesty's Royal prerogative
  • the Council may pay to the Lord Mayor for the purpose of enabling him to meet the expenses of his office such allowance as they think reasonable

Immediately after the result of the election is announced, the successful candidate publicly makes their formal declaration of acceptance of office and may then robe and exercise office.  The Mayor appoints a deputy mayor.  The office of Mayor becomes vacant if the mayor dies, resigns or ceases to qualify as a member.
