Local NewspapersIntroductionNewspapers are a superb source for researching family and local history, or for looking up more recent events. We have issues of local Croydon newspapers (see details in the tables below) dating from 1855 to the present. In the past, especially in the nineteenth century, the press carried very detailed reports of local governing bodies, such as the School Board and Local Board of Health, and are an essential source for studying the development of Croydon. There were also lengthy obituaries, lists of burials in local cemeteries, and sometimes incredibly detailed accounts of weddings. Newspapers can also be very useful for studying the First and Second World Wars, despite censorship restrictions. The effects of rationing, evacuation and air raids, and the changing roles of women, can all be traced.
There is a large collection of newspapers clippings relating to individual topics, such as local buildings, fairs and markets, and wartime. Since the late 1980s, all current newspapers have been indexed on a computer database. Prior to then, there are partial indexes relating to particular subjects and places. There are also biographical files containing clippings about prominent local people.
