Help for Students

If you are a parent who wants to study or train, you may be able to get help paying for childcare while you study.

The Government has increased funds to contribute to the childcare costs of more students and trainees and is considering other ways to make sure parents are able to study or train.

Ask your student welfare advisor to tell you what your childcare options are and what your college or university does to help students who are parents.

If you are a lone parent who is a full-time student in higher education, you may be eligible for the lone parent grant. This is not repayable and could be used to help towards childcare costs.

Childcare Grant for students with dependant children:

  • How much you get will depend on your income.  Any help will not be counted by the DSS in working out your benefit entitlement.

  • Who is eligible? Full time students aged up to 54 with dependant children in childcare.

  • How much? It will be based on actual childcare costs of up to a £100 a week for one child and £150 a week for two children.  The grant will be paid at 85% of actual costs for 40 weeks and 70% for the rest of the academic year.  This does not have to be repaid.

  • How is it paid? In three instalments from the SLC with your loan
